SR&ED for food & beverage

SR&ED for food and beverage development.

A formulation has to survive processing, storage and the move to larger equipment. Cedar follows the development behind those changes, writes the technical report and reconciles the batch, labour and external costs for your claim.

Discuss a project

Make the batch history tell the development story.

Formulation and process development often happen together. An ingredient change can lead to a new mixing method, heat treatment or storage trial. We connect those experiments around the behaviour your team was trying to understand.

We work with the developer and process lead to identify the relevant batches and explain their results. The same batch identifiers help us trace material use, staff effort and external testing through to the financial claim.

Illustrative examples

Development problems worth a closer look

These hypothetical examples show how a technical problem can lead to experimental work. We assess your project using its actual starting knowledge, investigation and records.

A stable formulation through heat treatment

Development challenge

A beverage formulation separates during its required heat treatment. Available formulation and process knowledge does not establish how to maintain stability while meeting the product’s other technical requirements.

Experimental work

Controlled batches compare ingredient ratios, mixing sequences and processing conditions. Measurements before and after treatment test explanations for the separation and establish the limits of the approaches tried.

Fermentation in a larger vessel

Development challenge

A fermentation process behaves differently after moving to a larger vessel. Established methods do not predict how mixing and oxygen transfer will interact with the culture under the required conditions.

Experimental work

Trials compare vessel settings and process changes using measurements over time. Analysis of the resulting fermentation behaviour tests the proposed explanations and guides the next operating conditions.

Claim strategy

Define the work and the costs.

We identify the experimental formulation and process work within the product programme. Routine recipe adjustments, consumer-preference testing, quality-control checks and commercial production are kept outside that scope.

Cedar reconciles the project costs with your financial records and documents the allocations used in the claim.

How CRA groups SR&ED projects
Supporting records

Start with the records from the work.

Keep the batch identifier on the formula, processing log and test result. Notes explaining a formulation or equipment change help connect those records.

CRA’s documentation guidance
Formulation versions
Ingredient quantities, specifications and batch identifiers for the formulations tested.
Processing logs
Mixing, temperature, time and other recorded conditions, together with the purpose of the trial.
Results and conclusions
Test methods, stability or process measurements and the analysis used to plan subsequent batches.
Batch and labour costs
Material quantities, staff activity, external testing invoices and associated accounting records.
Working with Cedar

A senior preparer leads your whole claim.

We handle the claim strategy, technical reports, financial reconciliation, tax schedules and filing coordination. Our fees are tied to the outcome of your claim, and full CRA audit and provincial review support is included.

  1. 1

    Set the claim strategy

We speak with the people who did the work, review the development records and identify the projects and costs to assess.

  2. 2

    Write and reconcile

We write the technical reports, reconcile expenditures to your accounts and prepare the federal and applicable provincial tax schedules. Your team provides the records and reviews the completed claim for approval.

  3. 3

    Coordinate filing and handle reviews

We coordinate the claim filing with your accountant, who files the corporate T2 return. If the claim is reviewed, we prepare technical and financial responses, attend meetings and coordinate with your team and accountant.
